      1. How and what funding can I apply for?

The 1+3 / +3 Proposal (Open) Studentship Competition

The competition is held annually by the ESRC. Students and supervisors are required to submit a completed application by the May deadline.  Please see below for the application procedure:

For the 2008 competition, there are approximately 100 studentships available in total.

Due to the limited number of awards available, the Proposal (open) competition will be held as two separate sub-competitions: a) the 1+3 and b) +3.

Students may only apply for either the Proposal (open) competition or the Nominated (quota) award. Students cannot apply to both.

Please read the ESRC Postgraduate Studentships in the Social Sciences Available in 2008: Guidance Notes for Applicants (PDF) before completing the application form.

Applications are due on 1 May 2008, and are sent from the institution's central registry.

To view the PDFs below, you must install Adobe Acrobat Reader, which can be downloaded from the Adobe website.

      2. How do I find out about eligible outlets for ESRC funding?

Departments/outlets wishing to apply for ESRC studentships must firstly hold ESRC recognition.

      Background Information

The recognition of masters courses and outlets is part of the Training and Development Board's quality assurance procedures and is designed to ensure that students funded by the ESRC receive high quality training, supervision and support in an active research environment. The core requirements for ESRC recognition are detailed in the Postgraduate Training Guidelines fourth edition. The Guidelines specify the training requirements that must be met in order to gain ESRC recognition. The current edition was published in April 2005 and can be accessed below.

      The next exercise:

The next exercise is due to be carried out in 2010.  Details will be published nearer the time.

      Currently Recognised Departments and Outlets

The links below detail which courses and outlets are currently recognised from the 2005 and 2007 recognition exercises. These outlets/departments are the only ones able to support ESRC studentships. Students wishing to apply for an ESRC studentship should therefore first check whether the outlet at which they wish to study is currently recognised by checking the 2010 lists, before applying for either a Nomination  (Quota) or Proposal (Open) Competition place.

Students wishing to apply for a +3 studentship should check whether their Masters qualification was obtained from an ESRC-recognised outlet. Therefore, results from previous Recognition exercises are given below:

      3. How do I make a complaint?
