      Student Internship Scheme

The ESRC places great emphasis on the importance of Knowledge Transfer and making an impact on policy and practice.

One way in which ESRC students can achieve this is via the Student Internship Scheme. The scheme is a joint initiative between the ESRC and a non-academic host organisation. It provides an opportunity for ESRC funded PhD award holders in their 2nd or 3rd year to spend three months in a policy/practice environment, where they work as part of a team involved with public and organisational policy.

The role of the placement is to inform policymakers and practitioners on the economic and/or social implications of the topic under review. During the internship, students explore a policy or strategic topic which is usually - but not always - related to their research interests. During the internships students are often expected to produce a short briefing paper or to contribute to a policy report.

The internship scheme provides both the students and the host organisation with a clear set of benefits and contributes to the skills and professional development of PhD students.

The internship award holders receive a 3 month fully funded extension to their PhD award (conditions apply). Internships last approximately three months.
