      Global Poverty and the Recession

      Beggar WomanThe second of the ESRC's Global Financial Crisis lecture series was held 19 March 2009, focusing on 'Global Poverty and The Recession'.

      Of the six billion people sharing our planet, almost half live under the poverty line of $US2 per day. Though growth predictions vary it is likely that, by 2020, the population will increase by approximately another 1.2 billion, of which some 95 per cent will live in developing countries. Such figures highlight the need to address the issues surrounding global poverty as a priority.

      Speakers at the lecture included Dr Peter Boone, of the ESRC's Centre for Economic Performance; Professor of Economics, Tony Venables, of the University of Oxford; and Dr J Allister McGregor, Leader of the Vulnerability and Poverty Reduction Team at the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex. The lecture was chaired by economist and journalist Evan Davis, of BBC Radio Four's Today programme and Dragons Den.

      Dr Peter Boone

      Dr Peter Boone is Research Associate at the ESRC Centre for Economic Performance, LSE, and Chair of the foreign aid charity Effective Intervention. He emphasises the importance of evaluating aid projects, in order to ensure quality control and efficacy.

      Dr Allister McGregor

      Dr Allister McGregor is Head of Vulnerability and Poverty Reduction Team at the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex, and former Director of the Wellbeing in Developing Countries Research Group, University of Bath. He provided an overview of short and long term impacts from the recession on developing countries.

      Professor Tony Venables

      Professor Tony Venables is BP Professor of Economics, University of Oxford, and Director of Oxford Centre for the Analysis of Resource Rich Economies and previously chief economist at the UK Department for International Development and research manager in the World Bank. He looked at the impact of the recession on the African continent.
