International Benchmarking Review of UK Economics

The ESRC, in partnership with the professional body for Economics in the UK, the Royal Economic Society, and in consultation with the Conference of Heads of University Departments of Economics conducted an international benchmarking review of UK Economics research.  This is third in the series of ESRC benchmarking reviews.

The Review was conducted by an International Panel (PDF) of six leading international academics, chaired by Professor Elhanan Helpman, Harvard University.  They have considered a range of data and evidence and met with a number of UK scholars and research users during their visit to the UK in March 2008.

The Review was managed by a Steering Group (PDF) chaired by the President of RES, Professor Sir John Vickers.

The Panel's report including the Steering Group's response is available here:

Also available is the following briefing document:

Following the original publication of the International Benchmarking Review of UK Economics by the Economic and Social Research Council and the Royal Economic Society, it became clear that some of the bibliometric data supplied to the Review Panel were inaccurate.  The data were therefore re-analysed and the Panel was invited to consider whether any changes should be made to its report.  We are now pleased to publish the Panel's revised report. The data corrections have not resulted in any changes to the Panel's overall conclusions, but some points of its detailed assessment in Chapter 3 of the report have been revised.  The changes are listed for ease of reference on the accompanying note.

The Council and the Society would again like to thank the International Panel for its thorough, stimulating and positive assessment of UK Economics.
