The ESRC student internship scheme

The ESRC Student Internship Scheme has been designed to provide current ESRC funded PhD students with the opportunity to carry out a 3 month placement with an organisation in the Public, Private or Third (Voluntary) sector.
The Internship scheme provides both the student and the host organisation with a clear set of benefits and contributes to the skills and professional development of PhD students.
Based on feedback received, students have identified the greatest benefits to be an improved understanding of policy formation as well as reviewing and networking skills. The scheme provides students with an opportunity to see the impact of research outside of an academic environment, and apply their skills and knowledge to a non-academic organisation.
Students will receive a 3 month extension to their PhD, and will be able to claim for reasonable travel and accommodation costs (apart from fees only students).
Host Organisations have benefited from real outputs, in terms of the production of briefing papers and reports, additional resources and the promotion of their organisation, with a clear positive impact from the policy papers and reports written by the students.
The ESRC Student Internship Scheme has the following list of host organisations taking part and includes the specific projects that are available, for internships to start from January to October 2010.
The ESRC Internships scheme is open to applications from ESRC funded PhD students who will be in their Second or Third years of study (or part time equivalent) in 2010.
