In a context where an inclusive society is being stressed by government ministers, disabled peoples inability to gain entry to, and move around in, Britains housing stock reinforces their incomplete citizenship. There is little knowledge about house builders reactions and responses to the statutory environment on access, nor how the needs of disabled people are being incorporated, if at all, into residential development processes. In seeking to redress this lucanae, the research is investigating the attitudes, policies, and practices of house builders, and related property professionals, towards the access needs of disabled people. A four stage research design is being used: (i). telephone/postal surveys of UK house builders; (ii). depth interviews with a sample of house builders; (iii). a longitudinal method with two contrasting house builders; (iv). depth interviews with access groups.
