This project analyses networking and alliance building among civic organisations (a term which includes public interest organisations, advocacy groups, social movement organisations, and community associations) active on environmental, urban and community, and minority issues. It does so through analyses of both interorganisational and interpersonal networks in two urban areas. To date, the networks linking citizens’ organisations and political advocacy groups to each other are still largely unexplored; the project aims to fill this gap. The information collected from civic organisations (mainly of a quantitative type) will be supplemented with in-depth interviews at a later stage of the project. The integration of quantitative and qualitative evidence will a) improve our understanding of citizens’ participation in contemporary Britain by looking at a peculiar aspect of participation, coalition building; b) identify the factors which may facilitate or discourage collaboration among civic political organisations; c) contribute to a theoretical approach to the study of political participation based on the concept of social network
