Start Date: 14/07/2004 End Date: 31/08/2005
Award/Grant Description

Any parent can tell you that not all children learn to talk and use language at the same speed, but the reasons why children develop at different rates are not well understood. We are investigating what might contribute to differences between children's language at one of the fastest periods of this development - the vocabulary burst, which occurs at around 21 months. At this time children learn words and grammar extremely quickly. We are testing language, movement, cognitive and auditory skills in children at this age who can be expected to develop language normally, as they have no diagnosed learning disability or hearing loss. This research should lead to methods of identifying children with language impairments at an earlier age than has been possible previously, and also to more knowledge about why children differ from each other in their development.
