| Award/Grant Description |
This study will examine the migration patterns and motivations of recent graduates from Scottish higher education. The principal aim of the project is to improve understandings of why some graduates leave Scotland to live and work elsewhere after completing their studies, while others stay in Scotland. The study aims to add to academic knowledge about the motivations for graduate migration decisions, and in so doing inform policies which seek to encourage more highly skilled people to stay in Scotland. The project will begin with a review and further analysis of existing statistical information concerning graduate migration to/from Scotland. This will be followed by two phases of primary research, both focused on a specific cohort: year 2000 graduates from the University of Edinburgh. A postal survey will generate a general picture of the migration patterns and characteristics of this cohort. This will be followed by eighty interviews with a sub-sample of survey respondents, which will produce a more detailed understanding of the relative influence of, and interaction between, the various factors behind graduate migration decisions. Interviewees will be divided into four groups based on their current domicile and domicile prior to attending university.
