Award/Grant Name: Exploring Perceptions of Quality of Life of Frail Older People During and After Their Transition to Institutional Care
Award/Grant Holder: Ms Susan Tester
Programme Name: Growing Older
Co-applicant(s): Professor Murna Downs
Start Date: 01/01/2000 End Date: 30/06/2003
Award/Grant Description

The study aims to contribute to understanding the meaning of quality of life (QOL) for frail older people; to develop innovative methods of eliciting their views; to examine ways in which transition to institutional care affects QOL; to explore inequalities, for example by gender or class, in experiences of QOL during and after this move; and to examine links between quality of care and QOL. The research will give priority to the views of older people, using qualitative methods. Stage 1 will identify views about QOL in frail older age, in group discussions with older people. Stage 2 will include general observation over 24 hours in each of six nursing homes. In Stage 3, two sessions will be held with each person in a sample of 60 older nursing home residents: the first will include a guided conversation, using Talking Mats, a low-tech tool to aid communication; the second, individual observation. In Stage 4 a detailed analysis will explore the main themes emerging from the findings. Stage 5 will produce reports of the research, and a version of Talking Mats specifically for use by care workers. The research will contribute to theories on ageing and to care policy and practice
