Award/Grant Description

Claims have been made for reminiscence activities improving quality of life outcomes in older people. This study will evaluate the impact of three processes (life review, reminiscence, and disclosure) on older peoples quality of life, for three contexts (alone, one-to-one, group) and two levels of cognitive impairment (impaired vs. non-impaired). Within one-to-one and alone conditions only, for non-cognitively impaired participants, talk-based vs. writing-based activity will also be compared. Two hundred and sixty four older people will be recruited from residential and community settings. Participants will receive four sessions of reminiscence-based activity, and be assessed before the intervention, immediately after each session, and one month after the final session, on various quality of life outcomes. The study will demonstrate if, and in what contexts, reminiscence-type activities have an impact on quality of life outcomes in older people. The key impact of the research will be to advance current therapeutic activity with older people closer to the goal of evidence-based practice. The findings of the study could be used in the development of guidance documentation for informal carers, and managers of care settings, as to how reminiscence activities might best influence the therapeutic environment for older people
