Please note the UK Economic & Social Research Council and the Nederlandse Organisatsie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO) bilateral call is being replaced in 2010 by the new Open Research Area (ORA) in Europe for the Social Sciences call. Previous Bilateral Calls
For the 2009 UK Economic & Social Research Council and the Nederlandse Organisatsie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO) bilateral call, collaborative research proposals were submitted only to the ESRC. The ESRC took the lead role in processing and assessing applications, with appropriate input from NWO. A decision on bilateral proposals will be made by ESRC's Research Grants Board, within its normal Standard and Small Grants competitions. Those proposals approved for funding will be jointly supported by the ESRC and NWO.
Please note that for the Dutch part of the research; social scientists could only apply for a PhD-position (max. 4 years full time) or a post doctorate position (max. 3 years full time). Social scientists applying from the Netherlands were required to hold a PhD degree and have tenure at a Dutch university, NWO or KNAW institute. When applying for a PhD position, the principal investigator in the Netherlands was, in general, the thesis supervisor.
Proposals were assessed, according to the criteria set out in the International Common Application Process.
Proposals should be submitted via Je-S into the call for bilateral grants (Small grants) or bilateral grants (Research grants), depending on the level of funding requested. In completing the Je-S form, applicants were required to consult the Je-S guidance on submitting a bilateral proposal (PDF).
The Dutch applicants should complete NWO's Financial Details and Additional Requirements Form 2009 (MS Word, 162Kb), which was included as an additional attachment in Je-S. The Dutch applicants will also need to submit this form only (not the entire application) to NWO through IRIS.
