Joint ESRC/DFID Scheme for Research on International Poverty Reduction
In 2005 the Department for International Development (DFID) and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) formed a strategic partnership to provide a joint funding scheme with a total budget of £13 million. The aim of the scheme is to enhance the quality and impact of social science research addressing the key international development goal of reducing poverty amongst the poorest countries and peoples of the world. It funds world class scientific research on issues relating to economic development and quality of life in less developed countries with the potential for impact on policy and practice for poverty reduction. The scheme has a current portfolio of 46 research projects from the three calls of Phase 1 of the scheme; a further 20 research projects have now been funded following the first call from Phase 2, led by research organisations from both the UK and overseas: The geographic focus of the projects is global: The projects span all six of DFID's research focus areas identified in DFID's Research Strategy (PDF) 2008-2013: You may also view details of the awards on the R4D DFID pages.

Independent Review of the First Phase of the Joint Scheme
An independent review of the first phase of the Joint Scheme was undertaken by Technopolis in late 2008. "ESRC and DFID welcome the publication of this review which recommends the continuation of the Joint Scheme."
