ESRC-NIH Research Collaboration on Understanding and Reducing Health Disparities/Inequalities

The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC-UK) and the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research, National Institutes of Health (NIH-USA) will jointly support collaborative research on health disparities/inequalities in the United Kingdom and/or the United States involving collaborative UK-USA research teams.

The research to be considered for joint support does not need to be comparative, but should have the potential for significantly advancing knowledge in the United States and the United Kingdom. Applications are to be submitted by the US partner in response to the NIH call, known as a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA). The call is entitled Behavioral and Social Sciences Research on Understanding and Reducing Health Disparities (PAR-07-379).

See the special Guidance for Applicants (please see below) for supplementary information regarding the scope of the joint awards. This complements Section I (Research Objectives) of the NIH call, and must be read in conjunction with the call as it is not reproduced within the call itself.

Please note that the NIH will continue to accept applications focused on public health issues of the United States and other countries when appropriate and consistent with the terms of the call.

The ESRC and the NIH anticipate supporting up to six awards, each of total costs (direct and indirect) not exceeding $250,000 per year for up to five years, subject to the availability of funds and receipt of a sufficient number of meritorious applications. See the Guidance for Applicants (please see below) for details.

This information is available on the OBSSR website.

      How to make an application

This call is being managed by NIH. No submissions should be sent via Je-S at this time.

The deadline is 19th September 2008. Applications must be submitted by the US partner to the NIH. Full details of how to apply are available from the link below.

Note that special guidance for this joint call details an annual cash limit for the UK element. For exceptional cases, the ESRC will consider waiving the annual cash limit requirement, although the overall costs requested for the UK element must stay within the same total cost envelope (where the maximum is a 5 year award at £63.5k p.a.). If you wish to do this, you must contact the ESRC in advance to discuss and explain the reasons for this. Note that this applies to the UK costs only - the NIH annual cash limit is as detailed in the 'Notes for Applicants' and will not be changed.

The special guidance includes information on how to detail the UK costs in an appendix to the application form. Please use the costs information sheet (MS Excel) to set out your costs.
