The call is now closed and there will not be a new call in 2010. The following is for information only.
In early January 2009 the ESRC launched a new scheme: New International Activities for Early Career Researchers. The scheme will provide opportunities for international mobility, exchange and networking for early career researchers (including doctoral students).
The scheme aims to attract innovative proposals that build upon existing established networks and activities, or which develop new activities based upon clear evidence of demand or need. It is expected that proposed activities will fall into one or more of the following strands:
- The provision of international workshops, summer schools or other events that stimulate networking around shared research or methodological agendas;
- Short-term mobility opportunities to enable groups of UK based early career researchers to participate in an international event or to benefit from specialist advanced methodological training only available outside of the UK;
- The establishment of new virtual networking opportunities.
The scheme is targeted at early career researchers. This includes doctoral students and researchers within five years of completing their PhD. Participation is not limited to ESRC funded research students or early career researchers and may include non-ESRC funded students and researchers in the social sciences whether full-time or part-time.
The scheme is open to proposals for student-led activities, as well as proposals where co-sponsorship has been or is sought from other stakeholders.
Applications can be made for up to £40,000 at 100 per cent full economic costs (FEC). The ESRC will meet 80 per cent FEC on applications. Applicants may bid for more than one activity provided that the total amount does not exceed £40,000 over a two year period. In exceptional cases applications for funding above £40,000 may be considered. If an application is being submitted that exceeds the published limit, it is strongly advised that the applicant discusses this with the ESRC office before submitting the application. The minimum amount that can be requested is £5,000 at 100 per cent FEC.
Full details of the aims and objectives of the scheme are given in the Scheme Specification downloadable below.
The deadline for applications to the scheme is 4 pm, 24 March 2009. Applications must be submitted via the Joint Electronic Submissions (Je-S) system.
