      UKTRC studentships

Phd Studentships Linked To Esrc/Dft/Scottish Government Uk Transport Research Centre

Up to eight prestigious doctoral studentships are being offered by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Department for Transport and Scottish Government. The funding is part of the UK Transport Research Centre (UKTRC), a new £7.25 million five year research centre aimed at bringing new social science insights to bear on the UK’s transport policy issues. The UKTRC will also facilitate a greater interaction between academics, government officials, and non-government organisations that work in transport. The UK Transport Research Centre (UKTRC) is jointly operated by Imperial College London, University College London and the University of Leeds.

A key goal of UKTRC is to develop and broaden the conceptual and methodological base which underpins the study of transport, drawing on hitherto relatively untapped expertise from across the social sciences.

It is anticipated that these advances from cross-disciplinary fertilisation will take place:

      • Through the application of novel concepts and insights which will provide different ways of framing problems, and hence encourage the formulation of new kinds of solutions.
      • Through the application of new qualitative and quantitative research methods that will result in innovative forms of data collection, analysis and interpretation of findings.

The disciplinary scope of the work will include (but not be limited to) perspectives from anthropology, economics, geography, history, law, marketing, science and technology studies, sociology, psychology, statistics, social policy, politics, and planning. These disciplines will contribute to the long term enrichment of transport research by extending and enhancing the conceptual, theoretical, analytical and methodological apparatus available to those working in the area.

The deadline for outline applications is 18th December 2009.
