Who is eligible to apply for it?
For the 1+3 scheme - recent graduates should consider this studentship along with candidates that fulfil the academic and residential eligibility requirements, but who have not completed a programme of research training.
Candidates who have taken other qualifications at postgraduate level, or have professional qualifications, may still apply for a 1+3 studentship. Similarly, candidates that have undertaken a masters, which is not recognised by the ESRC or equivalent to an ESRC recognised training course should consider this studentship.
For the +3 scheme - candidates who have completed a masters which is part of a currently recognised ESRC 1+3 programme or are able to make a case that they have completed an equivalent programme are eligible for this award.
Candidates may only apply for an award at an ESRC recognised outlet. Please make sure that your institution and subject area is recognised.
Please read the Postgraduate Training Guidelines (PDF) in conjunction with the list of recognised institutions and courses.

If you have any doubts about your residential eligibility, or if the grounds on which you intend to establish residential eligibility are likely to be complicated, please request advice from the nominated person for eligibility enquiries in the Registry at the University through which you will be making an application.
Academic eligibility enquiries:
Please speak directly with your potential supervisor.
Please read the Guidance Notes for Applicants (PDF), before completing the application form.
