      Language-Based Area Studies (LBAS) Centres

      The ESRC, together with the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and the Scottish Funding Council, is co-funding five Language-Based Area Studies (LBAS) Centres. 

      LBAS Centres are contracted for between £4m and £5.6m over five years.

      The LBAS Centres are intended to increase capacity in both linguistic knowledge and knowledge of the geographical area of the following spheres:

      • Russian, FSU and Slavic languages;
      • East Asian Languages, specifically Chinese and Japanese; and
      • Arabic and the Arab World.
