Cities: Economic Competition and Social Cohesion
This Programme ended in June 2002The programme aimed to improve understanding of how cities develop and mobilise distinctive economic assets to secure competitive advantage, and how these processes impacted upon and were influenced by social cohesion and environmental quality. The main objectives were: - to understand patterns and processes of social, economic and environmental change and innovation in UK cities, and their relationships to wider processes of transformation such as globalisation, European integration and technological change
- to identify the specifically urban assets, externalities, market processes and structures which help firms, other institutions and possibly communities to attain competitive advantage
- to identify the links between urban economic change and social cohesion and environmental quality, with an emphasis on the interrelationships and feedbacks linking urban social development and environmental conditions with competitive advantage and economic growth
- to identify measures to make UK cities better places to live for different social groups whilst at the same time enhancing their contribution to economic competitiveness.
