Dr Alan Gillespie has an extensive background in both the public and private sector. He graduated from Cambridge University, where after his first degree he obtained a PhD in Economic Geography, funded by the then Social Sciences Research Council. His first official appointment was at Citigroup/Citibank in 1976, where he was eventually promoted to Executive Director. In 1986, he moved to Goldman Sachs and Co, where he was made Partner and Managing Director, in 2001 he was made Chairman of the Ulster Bank Group, and most recently has been made Senior Independent Director of Old Mutual plc.

Within the public sector, Dr Gillespie has been the Chair of The Northern Ireland Industrial Development Board, the University Challenge Venture Capital Fund, the European Development Finance Institution and the International Finance Facility for Immunisation. He was also the Co-Chair of Northern Ireland Rediscovered, the Chief Executive of the Commonwealth Development Corporation and a non-Executive director of the √Član Corporation and United Business Media plc.

Dr Gillespie's experience will ensure a strong platform for the future challenges of the Council, which will see him work to improve the links between the ESRC, the research community, including learned and professional institutions and national and international research funding and policy agencies, and with the Government.
