Governance and structure

The ESRC Council is our senior decision-making body. It is made up of members from business, civil society and the public sector, as well as representatives from the academic community.

The ESRC Council comprises a structure of committees that work alongside a Peer Review College and grant assessment groups and panels. Our committees lead key aspects of our corporate strategy and oversee the development of our investments. (Learn more about our Committees, colleges and panels.)

The ESRC Council delegates day-to-day responsibility for the allocation of funds, management of current research investments, and development of policy and strategy to our senior management. Senior management includes our Chair, Chief Executive, Directors and Deputy Directors.

Our Chief Executive is responsible for the implementation of our policies and decisions, and for the overall management of the ESRC Office.

We have around 120 staff divided between two directorates.

Declarations of interest

Council, committee and panel members are required to declare any private, professional or commercial interests that might conceivably conflict with the interests of the ESRC. These interests are updated annually and are open to public inspection.
