Start Date: 15/03/2000 End Date: 31/05/2003
Award/Grant Description

This network is designed to enhance motivation, commitment and attainment through the effective use of pupils perspective on teaching and learning. It will support teachers in primary and secondary schools in developing manageable strategies for consulting pupils and evaluating the outcomes. It will open up, with teachers, new dimensions of classroom practice where they think pupil perspectives could make a difference, and will disseminate widely good ideas and practices. The networks main activities will be built round six projects : Supporting teachers in the process of pupil consultation; Understanding how teachers respond to and use pupil perspectives to improve teaching and learning in different subjects; Involving pupils as researchers to help them learn more effectively; Exploring with groups of pupils how the social conditions affect their participation and identities as learners; Embedding a commitment to pupil perspectives and participation in the organisational culture of the school; Supporting schools in developing innovative ways of using pupil perspectives to enhance engagement and progress. A meta-study will analyse the growth of interest in pupil voice and, using a multi-disciplinary framework, examine the different constructions of childhood and youth it represents, and how it might transform the status of pupils and conditions of learning.
