This research will address three aspects of the educational choices and experiences of students who choose to remain in the parental home. First, what are the characteristics of local-based students and how do these compare with students who choose to live away from home? Particular emphasis will be placed on socio-economic background and financial support of local-based students. Second, why do students choose to remain local, how important are financial considerations, employment options, peer-group and parental influences? Third, how do the experiences of local-based students differ from those of students living away, particularly participation in non-academic student activities? This last theme will also address the relationship between living at home/living away from home and transitions to adulthood and independence. The research will be based on a multi-method approach. A web-based questionnaire will be carried out with students studying at HEIs and FE in the Greater Merseyside sub-region to identify the characteristics of students living at home. To explore the reasons behind choosing to stay at home and the importance of access to local HEIs, focus groups discussions will be held with year 13 students who are in the process of making decisions about HE choice. Finally in-depth interviews carried out with current HE students will explore how they made their choice of HEI and their experiences while studying at HE
