This two year qualitative study (October 2001- September 2003) is investigating the operation of pre-school child care markets, focusing in particular on consumer and producer behaviour and interaction. Five themes are considered: i) the ways in which parents as consumers make use of this market; ii) how market use is related to gender roles within families; iii) how the purchase of child care articulates with individula families beliefs about child- rearing; iv) how child care markets work in particular localities; and v) how different fractions of the the middle class(es) engage with the problems posed by this market.
