| Award/Grant Description |
The project aims to determine the extent to which regular cannabis users consume the drug in situations that present a risk of harm to self or others. Emphasis will be placed on cannabis use in relation to driving habits, workplace activities and sexual practices, but the project will also provide information concerning general health, social and economic consequences of chronic use. The study will use a combination of survey and interview methods to compare a cohort of at least 100 regular, heavy cannabis users (characteristics: daily use for at least the previous 2 years) with a part-matched sample of infrequent users (cannabis use not exceeding three times monthly over the past 2 years). Concurrent use of other drugs, and the consequences of conjoint drug use, will also be characterised. Recruitment will span a representative demographic range. Public and commercial organisations have largely ignored the fact that some individuals perform potentially hazardous activities under the influence of cannabis. However, establishing whether there is any association between heavy cannabis use and the incidence of accidents, injuries or other indirect harm is important for evidence-based public health information, and for evaluating the need for drug testing in the workplace or at the roadside.
