The project will analyse the development of the educational trajectories of young people in terms of their educational values and orientations between the ages of 11 and 15 and will relate these to qualifications and other outcomes at 16 and beyond. These will be located within the context of the family and household as an educationally relevant environment. An innovative methodological feature of the research is the use of the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS) which has interviewed a large sample of adults (16+) annually since 1991 and has included 11-15 year olds in the household since 1994. A particular strength of the BHPS data is that it allows the detailed analysis of characteristics of young people and of their families as they develop over time. A particular focus of the study is on young people who disengage with education both pre and post 16, the consequences of such disengagement and its relationship to educational trajectories and home environments. The study will also engage with wider social science concerns about the reproduction of social and educational status and the interactions of social and familial constraints and personal choice in social and educational outcomes
