The research will explore the factors that influence teacher engagement in collaborative action research to develop their inclusive practice, so as to enable a more widely diverse group of learners to participate and achieve. The research will be carried out in six secondary schools (four in Wales, two in England). In each school, groups of teachers will work together to implement small scale, action research projects to improve pupil attitude to learning. Educational psychologists will play a key role in facilitating the projects; they will also work alongside the university researchers to monitor and explore the reasons for changes in teacher engagement. In addition the research team will monitor the impact of the teachers’ changing practice on the learning and school experience of their pupils. The researchers will analyse the information gathered to answer four research questions: 1) What factors hinder or help teachers from engaging in collaborative action research to develop their inclusive practice? 2) What can be done to enhance factors that help, and mitigate those that hinder? 3) Is there evidence for a relationship between teacher engagement, and the learning and participation of pupils? 4) In respect of these questions, are their significant differences between the Welsh and English contexts?
