The past decade has witnessed growing intensity in university-industry ties. This project will examine the nature of work roles and careers of academic scientists in university-industry collaborative ventures. It will focus on a growing category of academic scientists, referred to as 'linked scientists', who engage in the practices of both science and business, and develop knowledge networks and career patterns straddling the two sectors.
University-industry links and the collaboration of scientists across the two sectors have long been shown to be problematic because of the difficulty of reconciling the divergent work norms and career interests of scientists with the needs of the two different kinds of institutions. The study aims to explore how the development of 'linked scientists' might offer a potential solution.
It will examine how hybrid work roles and careers shape the cognitive abilities and competencies of academic scientists who engage in industrial collaborative ventures, and how their career needs are met within these. It will also examine the organisational frameworks that support cooperative behaviour and joint knowledge production across the sectors, and examine whether joint projects and research centres influence the training of young scientists and their career expectations and prospects.
