Award/Grant Description

The Homework project was a LINK award that involved partners at University of Sussex, Open Mind Productions and Channel 4 learning in the development of a maths education system for Key Stage 1 children (aged 5-7 years). The team worked together with parents, teachers and children to design and evaluate an interactive education system called HOMEWORK. The HOMEWORK system is built upon a pedagogical framework called the Broadband Learner Modelling framework and uses a combination of interactive whiteboard and tablet PC devices in combination with bespoke software. It was developed iteratively and incrementally to enable teachers to plan, build and execute individualised lessons for school and related activities for home, employing a selection of suitable multimedia and television resources distributed to the whiteboard and tablet PC devices. The system also helps parents to support their children with their maths homework and strengthens home - school links enabling teachers and parents to better understand what children have done both at home and at school. Through our empirical studies we have demonstrated that when designed and used appropriately educational technology can improve links between home and school learning and close the gap between parents, teachers and learners.
