Russian Industrial Development 1861-2011: A Case Study of the Oil Industry

  • Start date: 30 January 2012
  • End date: 29 January 2013

Dr Nathaniel Moser's PhD, which evaluated the performance of the oil industry in Russia since its emergence in the 1860s up to the present-day, provided a rigorous re-interpretation of the challenges experienced by Russian industry generally and the oil sector in particular during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It used a theoretical framework derived from organizational and institutional economics and a research methodology consisting of both qualitative and quantitative techniques. The research contradicted several influential past academic findings about Russian industry, and presented strong evidence for alternative explanations.
