TLRP: Beyond the school gates: context, disadvantage and ‘urban schools’
This chapter is focused on the barriers that are located in the wider contexts in which schools work. It considers the implication of these external factors for school improvement efforts. In so doing it questions whether schools alone can overcome the disadvantages that arise from economic poverty. The author argues that new forms of leadership are needed which recognise the contexts within which schools operate, both in terms of the social and economic contexts that envelop their students, and of the wider policy and practice contexts which are relevant to overcoming disadvantage.
