TLRP: Leading developments in practice: barriers and possibilities
Research points to practitioner inquiry as a strategy for encouraging the development of forms of teaching that can reach out to learners within a class. However, the implementation of such approaches is far from straight forward in school contexts that are facing pressures to improve test and examination results. This chapter describes the experiences of its authors in working in partnership with an urban secondary school to develop more inclusive practices. Their analysis of this experience throws further light on the way contextual factors, particular those associated with national reform policies, act as barriers to progress. It also suggests some possible ways of addressing these barriers.
