Recent international debate has suggested that the primary aim of school science should be ‘scientific literacy’. In addition to knowledge of the content of science, this also implies an understanding of the nature of scientific knowledge, its production and communication. Yet, there is little academic consensus about this element. A Delphi study was therefore used to explore the little academic consensus about this element. A Delphi study was therefore used to explore the the nature of the challenge which teaching these ideas poses for teachers of science.
