Towards Evidence-Based Practice in Science Education

The central aim of this Research Network is to improve our understanding of the interface between science education researchers and practitioners. Four inter-related projects will explore the ways in which practitioners draw upon evidence in taking actions and making decisions. The work will be carried out in collaboration with practising teachers in primary and secondary schools, and with others involved in the science education process (such as textbook authors and examiners). One project will develop and implement diagnostic tools for monitoring pupils? learning, and explore the impact on practice of the evidence teachers obtain with these tools. Two projects will work with groups of teachers to develop and evaluate short teaching packages, based on existing research evidence, to teach more effectively some important science ideas, and some key ideas about science, respectively. A fourth project will use interview and focus-group methods to explore the views of practitioners on research evidence, and the extent to which it influences their practice. This will augment the data collected in the course of the other three projects, to build up a more complete picture of the actual and potential role of research evidence in informing practice in science education
