TLRP: Improving the learning of secondary school teachers: supporting an expansive learning environment
‘Many teachers in our region have not learned anything for 20 years.’ Comment made in a BERA seminar, Exeter, Sept. 2002. This remark, made in all seriousness, is indicative of the common view that learning, even for professionals like teachers, only occurs on courses that have been explicitly focussed on such learning. An increasingly extensive research literature shows that this is not the case. The workplace is now widely acknowledged as a potentially rich environment for learning. In this paper, we report on a recently completed study which investigated, in detail, how secondary school teachers learn at work, and examined ways in which their learning could be enhanced.
