The scammers persuasive techniques model : development of a stage model to explain the online dating romance scam
This paper is currently under review. The editor has said that Reviewer's 1 comments need to be addressed and the article can be re-submitted to be considered for the British Journal of Criminology. This is one of the top ranked journals internationally in criminology. Reviewer 1's comments that need addressing include: This is a superb paper, a gripping read, on a very contemporary form of fraud. Well structured, original in its material, clear in its argument. I have little to add. But: The abstract under sells the piece. Consider removing the sentence on grounded theory and saying a little more about the substantive data or hypothesis proven. The diagram does not quite work for for me. There are 2 boxes with crisis when one could be used, then two alternate flows. Likewise the box on sexual abuse – which rarely happens – obviously need not be the penultimate step, just one possible route off to the side. The section on grounded theory seems a bit like going through the motions. On the other hand, maybe there was something quite distinctive about these 5 hour interviews that needs promoting more. The conclusion makes reference to some theories that were disproved. I missed those in the body of the text. Working through the paper one more time and ensuring the psychological theories proven/disproven are clear signposted would just sharpen it a fraction more. Brilliant work, all the same.
