Conference : coloured revolutions
This was the second of two conferences organised in conjunction with the CEELBAS centre, with additional support from BASEES and the Journal of Communist Studies and Transition Politics. The first conference was held at Cambridge in late April. The conference examined the contemporary political phenomenon of democratic ‘revolutions’ in the post-Soviet space, inspired by Western democratic models and supported, to varying degrees, by Western funded non-governmental organisations. The focus was on both country-specific and cross-national patterns of change that have affected Georgia, Serbia, Kyrgyzstan and other countries of the region, and on responses in Russia, Belarus and other countries, and the role of external agency (particularly the role of the United States). The organisers were Professors Stephen White (Glasgow) and David Lane (Cambridge). The events yielded a special (double) issue of the Journal of communist Studies and Transition Politics, vol. 25 no. 2/3 (June/September 2009), entitled ‘Rethinking the “Coloured Revolutions”’.
