Anglo-Japanese symposium on growing older in urban environments
16 August 2011
An Anglo-Japanese scientific symposium on growing older in urban environments was held in the Spring. The symposium was jointly supported by the ESRC, the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (London office) with the help of the International Longevity Centre (London/Tokyo).
The symposium considered the relationship between population and ageing and urbanisation, and the contrasting experiences in the UK and Japan.
The report on the meeting provides an overview of the main themes:
- the characteristics of ageing and urbanisation in Japan and the UK
- experiences of ageing in urban environments
- developing ‘age-friendly’ communities
- future issues for policy and research on population ageing and urbanisation.
